When a pipe cracks, it produces a sound due to the pressurized gas of liquid squeezing out. These detectors use the sonic or ultrasonic energy generated by the liquid as it leaves the pipe orifice.

The leaks make different types of sound as it expands through the pipe orifice. Generally, the leaks make a hissing or whooshing sound when the pressured liquid passes through them and finally produces a slashing sound when the liquid expands and flows all around the pipe. The Factors Affecting the Noise

There are several factors that can help to detect the sound from a leak pipe. They are the type of soil the pipe is under, the compaction, the depth of soil that covers the pipe, the pressure inside the pipe, diameters of the pipe, the material used to cover the surface, etc. Generally, the intensity of the leak or sound is propositional to the pressurized liquid in the pipe under and the depth of the pipe.

The usage of acoustic leak detectors are more effective at locations wherein the pipes used are of metal, copper or steel because these types of pipes transmits the leak sound to as far as hundreds of feet in all directions. PVC or asbestos-cement pipes cannot transmit sound so far and therefore, using detectors for such pipes is quite difficult.

How Do They Work?

Acoustic leak detectors are modest instruments. They are simple to use and are very fast in application. They can detect any underground pipe leaks. They have a sensible microphone that can detect the sound from the ground. In order to locate a potential leak, the detector can be used by moving with the device three to four feet at a time.

The microphone produces the variations in the sound while the digital meter displays the difference in the sound. When the sound increases at a particular point at a particular place while moving along the survey route, the location is said to be detected. Once the location is detected, the leak is examined and fixed.

These detectors are widely used in testing high pressure lines and ductworks.

They come with advanced electronic implication and filtering, easy to read digital display, a tactile keypad and a hydroponic probe sensor. Some devices may carry new type of multi-sensors.
