Six sigma is a strategy of business management. It was originally used by the Motorola Company. Created in 1986 it is now widely used to improve the quality of business processes on an enterprise. Its task is in detecting and removing the errors and minimizing variability in manufacturing. Six sigma involves different tools including special infrastructure with people who are experts in certain field as well as statistics and analyzing methods.
What six sigma actually means is that 99.99966% of the manufactured products are free from defects. That means that the manufacturers can afford only 3.4 errors per one million, which is quite achievable. Once that Motorola set up to act in this way the term of Six Sigma has become a goal for manufacturers and engineers to achieve.
Six Sigma method principles
The method of Six Sigma is thoroughly based on 6 main principles.
1) The first one is a sincere interest to the client. It involves respect and showing real interest for his needs and wishes.
2) The second one concerns management which should be based on facts and data so that there would occur no mistakes due to someone’s assumptions or other unsupported ideas.
3) The third one is the process orientation, including process management and process development orientation.
4) The forth one is proactive management.
5) The fifth is about collaboration without inner barriers. That means clearness of actions and processes inside the corporation so that different departments would support each other and be aware of changes inside the company.
6) The sixth principle is aiming at perfection plus being patient to fails, which is very essential in achieving success. It is very important not to stop after a mistake but continue moving on using the experience you received on the previous step. A successive businessman is the one who felt down 7 times, but managed to get up 8 times. That proverb could be applied to companies as well.
When fulfilling the components of the Six Sigma method they go with DMAIC stages, which are Define of the project aims and consumer demands, Measure of the running process, Analyze and definition of the main defects, Improvement of the process by means of reducing the amount of defects, Control of the process according to the abbreviation.
The Six Sigma has become an important method for achieving success. It is now educated in universities and widely applied by managers on manufactures and in business to improve the running situation.
